Important Note:

I am an educator and I depend on professional optometrists to test visual acuity before the Vantage Vision and Reading Program begins.

Classic Title

Vantage Vision and Reading was developed in the 1960s by Alice Ross in collaboration with Dr. Len De Marchi.  The goal was to provide vision support to students who were struggling with learning tasks because of underdeveloped vision processing skills.

We "see" with our eyes, and this "seeing" begins a series of events that culminate in what we call vision - the interpretation of what we see.

The eye has many specific duties it must do well for a person to read easily and fluently.

Even though a child may have 20/20 vision and can see perfectly, it is necessary to have near- vision skills to see to use their eyes efficiently from day to day.

Many children have undetected vision processing irregularities. Standard eye acuity exams tell us about 10% of what we actually need to know about the vision sense.

There are a variety of areas where vision can break down, such as teaming of the eye muscles, tracking, convergence, lens accommodation, saccade function and eye dominance.

Problems caused by poor vision skills:

  • Poor spatial awareness: This affects motor control, causing clumsiness in both fine and gross motor skills.

  • If the visual system is not functioning efficiently visual attention is not secure. Working at near point - for example, seat-work at school - is extremely uncomfortable and young children only stand this kind of stress for a short time.

  • Copying from the board to a paper my be very difficult if a student has poor lens accommodation.

  • Printing properly and neatly may be affected because eyes guide the hand in writing. With poor vision skills, students often print with awkward lettering.

  • Reading is affected the most by poor vision skills. Because all school subjects rely heavily on reading, a student is in jeopardy even though he may have a normal intelligence.

  • Behavioral difficulties can arise because of reading and writing problems. Teachers and parents often look for a psychological reason for poor work production and poor behavior, while the cause may be a lack of near vision skills.

The Vantage Vision & Reading Program

teaches reading to those whose reading difficulties stem from vision skills problems.

It's important to note that this type of vision therapy is not effective without a specialized and specific reading program that encourages students to depend on their eyes to read. It must be congruent with the stage of vision therapy used at any time. Not only does the reading program change every two weeks, but the vision program is changed as well.

Vantage Vision & Reading Benefits!

  • A simplified vision intervention that is cost and time effective

  • Remediates vision tracking deficits and ties this directly to reading instruction - a unique and powerful combination

  • Vantage Vision and Reading has an impressive success rate with non-reading and learning disabled children.

Vantage Vision & Reading Process

1. Early Learning Assessment

2. Report is sent home

3. Parents decide if they want to enroll their child in the Vantage Vision Program

4. If requested, a program is developed

5. A parent meeting is arranged and parents are taught the necessary exercises

6. Every two weeks there's a basic re-assessment and adjustment to programming.

Vision programs typically last 6-8 weeks.

If further support is necessary in other areas, that can be arranged.
